The Multivoltine Silkworm Breeding Laboratory plays a key role in improving silkworm breeds and supporting the silk industry through scientific breeding and genetic research. The major mandates are:
- Maintain and conserve elite genetic resources of Multivoltine silkworm breeds for future breeding programmes
- Supply of Breeder’s stock, Pure Mysore Race to the seed sector for multiplication under one way system
- Development of Multivoltine silkworm breeds/hybrids for high cocoon productivity, silk quality and adaptability to different climatic conditions
- Identification of promising Improved cross-breeds (ICBs) for high cocoon productivity and silk quality
- Evaluation of developed hybrids under laboratory conditions followed by On Station Trial (OST), On-Farm trials (OFT), authorization trials under different agro-climatic conditions before authorizing them for commercial use
